BIG MONEY OUT!
If the National Rifle Association is able to buy politicians then we will continue to have gun-related deaths across the country, including Chicago. I believe that the only effective way to really get money out of politics is to change attitudes. We must rely on small donor donations and elect those that are willing to only accept such small donations. This attitude of voters is growing with each election cycle and we must continue with this model.
I also believe we must address Super PACs. In Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 558 U.S. 310 (2010), the interpretation of the First Amendment was flawed. We must make sure that one day set a new precedent. But there are many things we should do now:
The Securities and Exchange Commission should require publicly traded corporations to disclose their political spending to their shareholders.
The Federal Communications Commission should create an online tool for the general public to have information on who is funding political ads.
The Federal Election Commission should prohibit super PACs from taking money from secret sources and tighten rules on coordination between candidates and super PACs.
I also strongly believe our nation should move towards publicly-funded campaigns for both House and the Senate elections.
